Proposals aim to improve construction workplace safety

| Apr 26, 2018 | Uncategorized |

For many construction workers in Kentucky and across the country, going to work can actually be dangerous. From the use of heavy equipment and materials to the particular dangers of unsafe job sites, construction workers can face an array of serious hazards. Because of the nature of construction injuries, accidents can threaten workers’ lives and their continued ability to do their jobs.

In response, many worker groups and industry associations are striving to improve workplace safety in the industry. For example, a 2018 safety report by the Associated Builders and Contractors proposes a series of safety steps that could make job sites 670 percent safer than the average in the industry. By following the steps it advises, ABC says that construction companies could reduce the rate of safety incidents on the job by 85 percent. ABC recommends an array of activities, from the establishment of on-site safety committees at each job location to the use of substance abuse treatment programs.

The statistics show that construction workers and companies might have a serious concern on their hands. Between 2011 and 2015, the rate of fatal accidents at construction sites grew by 26 percent. Some types of accidents grew at an even higher rate. For example, there was a 33 percent increase in deadly accidents that involved trapping construction workers in or between equipment and materials. Older workers and those under 20, as well as ironworkers, were most likely to be killed in these workplace accidents.

Workplace accidents and injuries can be serious for construction workers and employees in a range of industries. A workers’ compensation lawyer can help to protect an injured worker’s rights and help them file for the compensation to which they are entitled.
