The three types of distractions that cause vehicle accidents

There are many different types of distractions that drivers face every day in Kentucky. From using a cellphone to eating while driving, these things can be deadly for motorists on the road. Here are the common types of distractions that cause motor vehicle accidents and how you can avoid them.

Visual distractions

Visual distractions refer to anything that takes your attention away from the road. For example, you might see something in the distance that draws your attention away from driving for a moment. These distractions don’t seem so bad, but they can cause motor vehicle accidents if you don’t avoid or deal with them properly. As you drive, never look away from the road for more than a moment. Always keep your eyes on the road and use peripheral vision to see what’s happening around you.

Manual distractions

Manual distractions refer to anything that takes your hands away from your steering wheel. For example, when driving with children in the backseat, they might want something as their favorite toy or snack. If you have to take your hands away from driving for even a second to grab something, that’s enough time for something unexpected to happen on the road and cause an accident. It is important to keep your focus on the vehicle while driving and not let yourself get distracted. If you need something from the back seat, for instance, do so before getting into the car or wait until you stop at a red light.

Cognitive distractions

Cognitive distractions refer to anything that takes away your attention from driving. This includes things like daydreaming, using a cellphone while driving or listening to the radio. These types of distractions can be just as dangerous because they take you out of focus from what’s happening on the motorway. You can avoid cognitive distractions by training yourself to be in the moment while driving. You should also take measures to help you handle tasks that are likely to distract you without engaging in dangerous multitasking, such as turning your phone off or putting it away.

Getting into an accident with a distracted driver can be devastating. If their negligent actions caused a crash that resulted in your physical and emotional pain, you may be eligible to file a claim for compensation.
