What other drivers should know about motorcycle blind spots

On Behalf of | Oct 8, 2024 | Motorcycle Accidents |

Motorcycles have unique blind spots that are often overlooked by other drivers. Unlike drivers in larger vehicles, motorcyclists have a narrower field of vision, which affects their blind spots significantly.

It is important for drivers of cars and trucks to understand these blind spots to avoid putting themselves and motorcyclists at risk.

Motorcycles have limited visibility behind them

Motorcycles do not have rearview mirrors like cars. Their side mirrors alone can only provide a limited view, especially directly behind them. This creates a significant blind spot for motorcyclists, which drivers may not realize. A car following too closely may not be visible to the rider, making sudden stops or changes in speed dangerous.

Lane changes can be risky

When motorcyclists need to change lanes, they often have difficulty seeing vehicles directly beside or behind them. The smaller mirrors and lack of rear visibility make it harder for riders to spot vehicles lingering in these areas. Drivers should avoid lingering in the blind spots of motorcycles, especially when the motorcycle appears to be preparing to change lanes.

Wind and road conditions impact motorcyclists

Motorcycles can be more affected by strong winds and road debris, causing them to shift slightly in their lane. This movement can make it difficult for the rider to check their blind spots. Drivers should be aware that motorcyclists might not always see them and should allow motorcycles extra space to account for any sudden adjustments they need to make.

High speeds amplify blind spot risks

At high speeds, motorcyclists have even less time to react to vehicles in their blind spots. Their narrow profile and limited rear visibility mean that cars can quickly slip out of view without the rider realizing it. Passing a motorcycle at high speeds or riding too closely in heavy traffic can easily lead to a motorcycle accident.

According to Kentucky traffic collision data, 1,619 motorcycles were involved in traffic collisions in 2022. As with any vehicle, it is important to respect a motorcycle’s blind spots and give them space to maneuver to help prevent such accidents.
